Who Discovered the New R.1 Variant Virus in Japan, the Result of a Covid-19 Mutation, Has Spread to the US

TRIBUN-VIDEO.COM - The World Health Organization (WHO) discovered a new variant of Covid-19 called R.1 in Japan.

So far, WHO is still monitoring this variant.

Reportedly, this variant has spread to all regions in the United States (US).

The R.1 variant was first identified by WHO in January 2021 in Japan.

Quoted from Pos-Kupang.com, this was conveyed by the spokesperson for the COVID-19 Task Force, Wiku Adisasmito in a broadcast on the BNPB YouTube channel, Tuesday (28/9/2021).

"The R.1 variant was first identified by WHO in January 2021 in Japan and is known to have spread in several regions in the United States currently," said the spokesperson for the COVID-19 Task Force, Prof Wiku Adisasmito in a broadcast on the BNPB YouTube channel, Tuesday 28 September 2021.

Regarding this discovery, the Covid-19 task force asked the public to remain alert.

This is because the new variant has reportedly spread to all regions in the United States (US).

Wiku said, although still under WHO monitoring, the R.1 variant is a reminder that Covid-19 has not completely disappeared.

Therefore, he asked the public to consistently implement health protocols.

"What we have to do is consistently implement health protocols in all aspects of life without fear of overdoing it," he said.

Director of Prevention and Control of Directly Infectious Diseases, Directorate General of P2P, Ministry of Health (Kemenkes), Siti Nadia Tarmizi, said that the R.1 variant had not been identified as having entered Indonesia.

"It hasn't entered Indonesia yet," said Nadia last Monday.

It is known that the COVID-19 R.1 variant in the United States infected residents and staff in nursing homes.

This variant even infects residents and staff at nursing homes who have received complete vaccination.

Variant R.1 is a version of the Covid-19 virus that experiences mutations related to changes in the function of the virus.

The United States Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) stated that the R.1 variant has several important mutation characteristics.

These characteristics include increased viral transmissibility, reduced effectiveness of convalescent and post-vaccination therapy, and the potential to reduce the effectiveness of neutralizing antibodies.

It is possible that the R.1 variant will overtake the Delta variant as the most severe or transmissible mutation of the corona virus.
