Vice President Ma'ruf Amin: Religion allows the death penalty for corruptors

Vice President Maruf Amin said the death penalty for corruptors could be used, but with very strict conditions. This was conveyed by Maruf Amin to journalists, Wednesday (11/12/19). In fact, Maruf Amin emphasized that the death penalty is not prohibited in religion for certain criminal cases.

Maruf explained what is meant by certain criminal cases, namely cases that are very difficult to resolve and there is no other way to provide a deterrent effect other than the death penalty.

This is also considered to be in accordance with the laws in force in Indonesia. Its implementation is in accordance with what has been regulated in Law no. 31 of 1999 concerning Corruption Crimes (Tipikor).

However, Maruf hopes that if the death penalty is really applied to corruptors, this threat can have a deterrent effect so that no one else dares to commit corruption.

Previously, President Joko Widodo had said that the death penalty could be imposed if it was in accordance with the will of the community. The government is ready to revise the anti-corruption law to accommodate this alternative threat of criminal punishment.
