Demonstrating against the Job Creation Law, Students Stayed Until Midnight

BANJARMASIN, KOMPAS.TV - Efforts to disperse the masses who were demonstrating against the Omnibus Law on Job Creation were carried out by South Kalimantan Regional Police Chief Inspector General Nico Afinta together with Danrem 101/Antasari Brigadier General Tni Firmansah and South Kalimantan Confederation of Trade Unions (KSPSI) Legal Bureau Sumarlan on Thursday (10/15/20).

However, attempts to persuade them to disperse remained unheeded by students who had remained on Jl. Mangkurat's stomach. The city of Banjarmasin, South Kalimantan, has been the location of the demonstration since around 14.30 in the afternoon, Thursday (15/10/2020).

It was past eight in the evening, and the crowd remained at the demonstration location as did the security officers who remained in line.

The crowd even threatened not to disperse before demanding that President Joko Widodo appear in South Kalimantan and immediately issue a Government Regulation in Lieu of Law (PERPPU) to cancel the Omnibus Law on Job Creation.

"What is clear is that we will continue to act, we will plan again, we will consolidate again, we will go down again," said Ahdiat Zairullah, Regional Coordinator of BEM throughout South Kalimantan.

After the efforts of the Regional Police Chief and Danrem had not been successful, traffic flow was then partially opened and students continued to occupy the Mangkurat road until close to midnight.

Until they were given a deadline of 12 o'clock at night, the officers then returned to the students to persuade them to disperse.

The student coordinator, who at that time had held discussions with his colleagues, then returned and stated that he would remain.

After going through a tough debate, the crowd chose to stop their action and dispersed together at around 00.30 WITA.

The students then left the demonstration location holding hands while singing a number of songs.

The action, which lasted approximately ten hours, ended peacefully without causing significant damage.
