Sriwijaya Air Falls, How is it Monitored? Aiman (part 4)

JAKARTA, KOMPAS.TV - The world of Indonesian aviation is being tested again. The Sriwijaya SJ-182 plane, on the Jakarta-Pontianak route, carrying 62 passengers and crew crashed in the waters of the Seribu Islands, Jakarta. The process of searching for plane debris and victims is still ongoing. Until Tuesday (12/01), the joint team had found the Flight Data Recorder (FDR), which is part of the plane's "black box", in the waters of the Java Sea.

Later, part of the Cockpit Voice Recorder (CVR) could also be removed, although it was no longer intact. These two objects will be used as sources for analyzing the causes of accidents.

Sriwijaya Air SJ-182 was found to have lost contact at 14.40 WIB on Saturday (9/1/2021), 4 minutes after taking off from Soekarno-Hatta Airport. Based on the results of initial analysis, this 26 year old iron bird was recorded as free falling from a peak height of 3,322 meters above sea level to 76 meters above sea level. When it touched the water, it is suspected that the plane's engine had not yet stopped so it was still sending coordinate, altitude and speed data. Radar data obtained by the KNKT from Airnav Indonesia also shows this.

Although the Ministry of Transportation, through an official release, explained that the Boeing 737-500 aircraft was airworthy, there are a number of estimates based on conditions immediately before the accident, namely bad weather, components and aircraft control problems.

Without intending to preempt the KNKT investigation, Kompas TV journalist Aiman Witjaksono carried out a flight simulation with aviation practitioner, Captain Vincent Raditya.

Apart from that, Aiman also interviewed the Chairman of the 2007-2015 KNKT, Rear Marshal (Purn) Tatang Kurniadi and aviation observer, Alvin Lie, to find out their analysis of the accident that occurred at Sriwijaya Air based on their experience. Can weather and problematic engine components cause accidents? What to do?
