Regarding Natuna, Indonesia cannot lose to China!

The Indonesian government expressed a firm stance in responding to tensions in Natuna waters due to the presence of Chinese ships. President Joko Widodo stated that there was no bargaining regarding Indonesia's sovereignty in Natuna, Riau Islands.

This statement was made by President Joko Widodo when chairing the Plenary Cabinet Meeting at the State Palace. The President stated that there was no bargaining regarding the territory and sovereignty of the Republic of Indonesia.

The President's reaction was in response to the presence of Chinese fishing vessels in Natuna waters carrying out illegal fishing and being guarded by Chinese fisheries monitoring vessels.

Coordinating Minister for Political, Legal and Security Affairs Mahfud MD stated that he would send fishermen from the North Coast of Java to fish in Natuna waters. There are 120 fishermen who will be facilitated by the Government to fish in Natuna. Mahfud stated that apart from mobilizing fishermen, patrols would also be carried out to protect state sovereignty in Natuna.

Head of the TNI Information Center, Major General Sisriadi, stated that TNI operations to secure Natuna waters were carried out in accordance with international legal procedures. Sisriadi stated that Indonesia did not want to be provoked by the presence of Chinese ships in Natuna, which could be detrimental to Indonesia.

Acting Governor of the Riau Islands, Isdianto, stated that the presence of Chinese fishing boats being escorted disturbed fishermen from Indonesia. Isdianto added that the presence of Chinese fishing boats cannot be separated from the abundant fish wealth in Natuna waters.

Minister of Maritime Affairs and Fisheries Edhy Prabowo emphasized that Indonesia must not lose in responding to the entry of ships from China into Natuna waters. Apart from absorbing information from Natuna fishermen, the KKP Minister said that at the end of December 2019 he had arrested three foreign vessels.
