Dutch King Returns Diponegoro Keris to Jokowi

BOGOR, KOMPASTV Finally, the keris belonging to National Hero Prince Diponegoro was handed over to President Joko Widodo, Tuesday (10/03/2020).

Dutch King Willem Alexander handed over a keris symbolically during his meeting with President Jokowi at the Bogor Presidential Palace, West Java, Tuesday (10/3/2020).

Reporting from Kompas.com, the keris is known to be stored in the Volkenkunde Museum, Leiden, Netherlands.

This is because the existence of the keris became a mystery after the Koninklijk Cabinet van Zeldzaamheden (KKZ) disbanded.

KKZ is a special collection of Dutch Royal cabinets.

Before being returned to Indonesia, various research processes were carried out by Dutch and Indonesian researchers.

Minister of Foreign Affairs Retno Marsudi said that the Indonesian side from the director general of culture had checked directly with the Netherlands. This is to ensure that the keris in question indeed belongs to Indonesia.

The keris itself was obtained by the Dutch when they captured Prince Diponegoro after the great war of 1825-1830.

Colonel Jan-Baptist Cleerens then gave Prince Diponegoro's keris as a gift to King Willem I in 1831.
