Pros and cons of Jokowi's statement about corruptors sentenced to death
The question was asked by a Jakarta 57 Vocational School student named Harley Hermansyah to President Jokowi on World Anti -Corruption Day on Monday (9/12/2019).
Harley's question re -opened a classic debate regarding whether or not the death penalty was needed for corruptors. President Jokowi himself initially chuckled at that question. He then explained that the current law did not regulate the death penalty for corruptors.
"Yes, if there are corruption in the law, they will be sentenced to death, but in the law there is no corruption sentenced to death," Jokowi said.
Jokowi then asked the Minister of Law and Human Rights who attended the event. Yasonna explained that the rules related to the threat of death penalty at this time only applies to perpetrators of corruption related to natural disasters. The rule is contained in Law Number 31 of 1999 concerning Eradication of Corruption Crimes (Corruption).
In addition to corruption of natural disaster funds, the death penalty can also be imposed on corruption during the state of the monetary crisis or the perpetrators of corruption who repeatedly commit their actions. Nevertheless, until now no corruptors have been sentenced to death by the court.
"The existence (the rules) alone has never been decided by the death sentence," continued Jokowi.
President Jokowi then explained that currently the government is trying to build a system of prevention of corruption practices.
"So that the existing officials cannot commit corruption, so that all are good, so that the fence can eliminate corruption in our country," he said.
"But whatever all requires the process of other countries also needs this process, not easy goods," continued Jokowi.
Then is it true that corruptors are exactly sentenced to death? Is the death penalty for corruptors effective for preventing corruption practices in Indonesia? Is poverty, revocation of political rights, until the prohibition on occupying strategic positions has a deterrent effect?
To discuss it already present in the studio, a member of the House of Representatives Commission III from the PDI Perjuangan Faction Masinton Pasaribu and the anti -corruption activist Saor Siagian.
