Vital Jakarta areas such as Monas often flood, why?

JAKARTA, KOMPAS.TV - The rain that fell on Jakarta on Sunday (2/2/2020) again caused flooding in the Monas area, specifically around Jalan Medan Merdeka. Even though the flooding did not last long, it was enough to hamper traffic flow in vital areas of Jakarta.

DKI Jakarta Provincial Government Secretary Syaifullah directly checked the flood conditions that occurred at Monas. According to him, the flood that occurred at Monas was a queue of water that would enter the ground.

"I think this is just a problem of water queues," said Syaifulla.

He admitted that the mouth of the water channel had not been tested, resulting in queues of rainwater entering the culverts. The poor drainage system means that water cannot flow normally until it finally spills back onto the road.

"Earlier there were several water mouths that we asked to immediately widen, the time to do this was not calculated enough," added Syaifullah.

He also said that his party would carry out an evaluation and would widen the water mouth four times the existing one.

The heavy rain that poured from night to morning left the roads in Medan, West, East, North and South submerged in water. This puddle is not the first time this has happened. Because at the beginning of 2020, the Monas area was also flooded.
