Japan Gives IDR 6.9 Trillion in Debt to Indonesia to Handle Covid-19

JAKARTA, KOMPAS.TV - Indonesia received a loan from the Japanese government worth 50 billion yen or IDR 6.9 trillion at an exchange rate of 139 rupiah per yen.

This loan in the form of fiscal assistance will be used to handle the Covid-19 pandemic.

Japan will also encourage health assessment institutions in Indonesia by providing medical and goods.

"First, taking into account the impact of COVID-19 on the Indonesian economy, on this occasion Japan has determined to provide a loan as fiscal assistance of 50 billion yen to increase Indonesia's disaster management capacity. In addition, Japan will encourage cooperation with health assessment institutions in Indonesia through purchases medical goods and equipment," said Yoshihide Suga, Tuesday (20/10/2020).

Apart from that, Japan and Indonesia also agreed to open limited travel access for business people and nurses or caregivers in the midst of the pandemic.

The detailed regulations are being negotiated by the foreign ministers of the two countries and are targeted for completion next November.

Defense matters and economic cooperation also did not escape discussion.

Indonesia appreciates the expansion of investment by Japanese companies in Indonesia.

Japan is also determined to advance cooperation in the infrastructure sector, such as the construction of the MRT, the Jakarta-Surabaya semi-fast train line, Patimban Port, and the development of Indonesia's outer islands.
