Jakarta Floods Again: Provincial Government Slow to Anticipate? Can You Cope?

KOMPAS.TV - Once again, Jakarta is surrounded by floods. The same question arises again: Why do floods continue to occur? Can the DKI Jakarta Provincial Government overcome the floods that continue to spread to several areas of the capital city?

Flooding occurred again in the capital. DKI Jakarta Governor Anies Baswedan asked his staff to focus on dealing with floods.

However, the PSI faction in the DKI Jakarta DPRD believes that Anies is more focused on Formula E matters rather than finding solutions to overcome flooding.

Previously, heavy rain that poured down the Jakarta area since the early hours of February 25 2020 caused a number of areas in the capital to be flooded.

One of them is in the Bendungan Hilir area, Central Jakarta, traffic in that area is completely paralyzed. Residents were forced to wade through the flood waters on foot or using rubber boats.

The flood also triggered damage by residents around the Jakarta Garden City complex, Cakung, East Jakarta. They blamed the construction of the AEON Mall and complex as the cause of flooding in residents' homes.

Meanwhile, Anies Baswedan said that based on BMKG estimates extreme weather will still occur until March 2020. For this reason, Anies has given nine directions to his staff to help people affected by flooding.

However, a member of the DKI Jakarta DPRD from the PSI faction, Justin Adrian, criticized Anies Baswedan's work in dealing with floods and assessed that Anies paid more attention to matters regarding Formula E and the revitalization of Monas than dealing with floods.

Not only that, PUPR Minister Basuki Hadimuljono also spoke about flooding in Jakarta. Basuki assessed that the flooding was due to the drainage capacity being smaller than the rainfall. For this reason, PUPR will build pump houses in a number of locations to handle flooding in the long term.
