Switching to Digital TV, Government Provides Free Set Top Boxes for 6.7 Million Poor People

JAKARTA, KOMPAS.TV - In three days, Analog TV broadcasts will be turned off in 166 districts and cities throughout Indonesia.

The cessation of analog broadcasts marks the start of the first stage of migration from analog to digital television broadcasts.

The second stage is scheduled to take place on August 25 and November 2 for all of Indonesia.

The Minister of Communication and Information, Johnny G Plate, said that the advantages of digital TV broadcasts are that they are clean, clear and sophisticated.

To receive digital broadcast services, residents must purchase an additional set top box which still uses a UHF receiving antenna.

Once installed, broadcast channels can be searched automatically in the search menu to enjoy broadcasts.

President Joko Widodo said that the migration to digital TV was part of technological transformation.

The government also provides free set top boxes for around 6.7 million poor people.

Analog TV migration to digital is also being undertaken to reorganize the use of limited frequencies and provide sufficient frequency space for fast internet and the digital economy.
