Anies Baswedan is reluctant to comment on the revitalization of Monas

JAKARTA, KOMPAS.TV - The Governor of DKI Jakarta, Anies Baswedan, is reluctant to comment on the felling of hundreds of trees in the courtyard on the south side of the Monas area, Central Jakarta, for the sake of revitalization.

Anies submitted an explanation regarding the Monas revitalization project to the head of the DKI Jakarta Cipta Karya, Spatial Planning and Land Service, Heru Hermawanto.

The southern side of the national monument or Monas area is now like a large concrete field, due to the revitalization program.

Previously, more than 200 trees were planted in this area.

This action by the DKI Jakarta Provincial Government has also invited polemics.

The chairman of the DPRD, Puan Maharani, who is also the granddaughter of Indonesia's first president, Soekarno, spoke about the Monas revitalization project.

Puan asked the DKI Provincial Government not to change Monas, and to return Monas to its original state.

Puan also requested that the existence of Monas be maximized as an icon of Indonesia, not just an icon of the city of Jakarta.

Meanwhile, the state secretariat ministry confirmed that the revitalization of Monas had not yet received permission from the steering commission for the development of the western independent region.

The existence of this steering commission is stated in presidential decree number 25 of 1995 concerning the development of the Medan Merdeka area in the special capital city of Jakarta.

The presidential decree stipulates that any development carried out in the Medan Merdeka area must obtain permission from the steering commission.
