Bahar bin Smith was named a suspect for alleged hate speech he conveyed in a video lecture in Bandung some time ago.
The police explained the reasons for Bahar's detention.
"Of course investigators have subjective and objective reasons for detention," said the Director of Special Criminal Investigation at the West Java Regional Police, Police Commissioner Arief Rachman, Monday (3/1/2022).

There were also subjective reasons taken by investigators because they were concerned that Bahar would run away and repeat his actions, including destroying evidence.
"Subjective reasons are fear of repeating criminal acts, fear of running away and destroying evidence," he said.
Meanwhile, for objective reasons, the articles charged against the two suspects carry more than five years in prison.
"The objective reason is that the threat of punishment for the articles alleged by the two suspects is more than 5 years in prison," said Police Commissioner Arief Rachman.
There is also an article that ensnares Bahar which carries a sentence of more than 5 years in prison. Bahar was charged under Article 14 paragraphs 1 and 2 of Law Number 1 of 1946 concerning criminal law regulations in conjunction with Article 55 of the Criminal Code and/or Article 15 of Law number 1 of 1946 concerning criminal law regulations in conjunction with Article 55 of the Criminal Code and/or Article 28 paragraph 2 in conjunction with Article 45A of the ITE Law.
